A woman allegedly stabbed a 3-year-old boy to death outside an Ohio grocery store in a seemingly random attack.
The boy, Julian, and his mother, Margot Wood, were attacked around 3 p.m. on Monday, June 3, in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle in North Olmsted, approximately 15 miles from Cleveland, according to North Olmsted police.
Julian sustained stab wounds to his back and cheek, while Wood, 38, survived with non-life-threatening injuries, police reported.
The suspect, 32-year-old Bionca Ellis, was taken into custody.
North Olmsted police Detective Sgt. Matt Beck stated at a news conference on Tuesday that Ellis and the victims were strangers, describing the incident as a "random act of violence."
Ellis allegedly acquired a "kitchen knife" from a nearby store and followed Mrs. Wood and her son to the Giant Eagle parking lot, Beck explained. She then attacked them near their car, with Julian seated in a shopping cart.
North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones expressed her condolences at the news conference, saying, "As a mother, I cannot even begin to fathom the sense of loss this family is experiencing. The city and I all share in your loss."
Ellis has been charged with aggravated murder, with additional charges expected to follow.
