President Bola Tinubu has honored Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka by naming a major road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after him, citing Soyinka's contributions to bringing fame and pride to Nigeria.
Tinubu announced this decision on Tuesday during the commissioning of the fully developed arterial road N20 in Abuja. At the event, FCT Minister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike assured that the president would face no challenges in future elections in the FCT, emphasizing that residents could attest to his fulfillment of promises.
Wike remarked, "It will be difficult for anyone to challenge you in the FCT. The evidence is clear. You've kept your promises."
Historically, incumbent presidents have often lost the FCT to the opposition in past elections. The road-naming decision follows Wike’s recommendation, as he oversaw the construction of the road within nine months.
Tinubu praised Wike for ensuring significant achievements within the administration's first year and reiterated his commitment to economic development across Nigeria. He stated, "To the FCT Minister and his team, thank you for giving this government a successful first year. The acronym 'WIW – Wike is Working' is resonating with all of us. Today, there is great value in the FCT, bringing economic prosperity to the people."
Tinubu continued, "Naming this road as Wole Soyinka Way is well-deserved. He is our foremost playwright, novelist, and Nobel Prize winner who has brought Nigeria international acclaim. We accept this recommendation on behalf of the people and the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
Highlighting the infrastructure's importance, Tinubu noted, "The completion of this project, with its advanced facilities, is crucial for supporting our growing population and economy. Thank you, Wike and the entire team. My heart is full of joy and pride. You have proven the doubters wrong."
Wike also mentioned that the road project, awarded in 2020 for N30.6 billion, had no cost variations. He emphasized the significance of showcasing the road's transformation to the public and urged the president to continue recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to the country.
He concluded, "It is important to honor those who have made Nigeria proud while they are still alive. Naming this road after Wole Soyinka, our only Nobel Laureate, will inspire others to strive for excellence. I recommend naming this road Wole Soyinka Way in recognition of his contributions."
