Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and husband to tennis legend Serena Williams, has recently disclosed a surprising health diagnosis: Lyme disease. The 41-year-old shared this news in a series of posts on X/Twitter on Tuesday, detailing how the diagnosis came about unexpectedly during a round of comprehensive medical tests.
"Doing a full battery of health scans, tests, etc, and found out I have Lyme disease," Ohanian revealed. "Wild. No symptoms, thankfully, but gonna treat."
Ohanian went on to explain some additional health insights gleaned from the tests: "Good cholesterol is too low. Bad cholesterol is just OK. Gotta work on that. On the plus-side: 822 ng/dL total + 162 ng/dL free testosterone."
The tech entrepreneur expressed his surprise at the diagnosis, noting his limited exposure to the environments where Lyme disease is typically contracted. "I've got a loved one who had it a few years back, showed tons of symptoms etc and just couldn't figure it out until they tested him for it and then found it (treated it successfully, too)," he added.
Intent on addressing the ailment promptly, Ohanian indicated his proactive approach: "I'm gonna grab some antibiotics. Can't keep me down, tick!" alongside an image of The Tick cartoon character.
Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Common symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a distinctive skin rash known as erythema migrans. While early detection and treatment with oral antibiotics can effectively manage Lyme disease, untreated cases may lead to more severe complications affecting the joints, heart, and nervous system.
Ohanian's openness about his diagnosis underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt medical attention, even in the absence of initial symptoms. As he prepares to tackle Lyme disease head-on, his experience serves as a reminder of the disease's potential impacts and the importance of proactive health management.
