Breaking News: Alabama Legislator Arrested on Felony Charges

Montgomery, AL – State Representative Kelvin Jamichael Lawrence, a Democrat from Alabama, was arrested on Tuesday, as reported by WSFA-TV. Lawrence, aged 50, faces two felony charges: second-degree forgery and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

The indictment accuses Lawrence of "intent to defraud, falsely made, completed, or altered a builder’s license," according to the Alabama Attorney General's office. WPMI-TV in Mobile noted that these charges are classified as Class C felonies, each carrying a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years. Consequently, Lawrence could face up to 20 years behind bars if convicted.

In addition to the legal repercussions, Alabama law mandates the automatic removal of any elected official convicted of a felony from office.

In response to the arrest, Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter released a statement emphasizing the expectation of integrity among House members. "Rep. Kelvin Lawrence’s indictment presents an unfortunate situation for his constituents and colleagues alike," Ledbetter stated. "I have full confidence in our justice system’s ability to assess the facts of this case and determine an appropriate course of action."

Lawrence has yet to comment publicly but indicated he plans to make a statement soon. The indictment remains sealed, but it alleges that Lawrence used a forged builder’s license with fraudulent intent. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the state's Special Prosecutions Division would handle the prosecution.

Public reaction on social media has been intense, with many calling for strict legal action. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "Prosecute to the full extent of the law. Enough of their BS that no one is above the law. Prove it." Another resident expressed outrage at what they described as "entitled behavior."

This developing story highlights the serious legal and political implications of the charges against Rep. Lawrence.
