The monarch commended the current efforts by the governors and Igbo members of the National Assembly to secure Kanu's freedom, describing it as a commendable move. Speaking with Sunday Vanguard in Umuahia, Eze Kalu emphasized that Kanu's release was long overdue. He clarified that contrary to the Federal Government's narrative, Kanu did not jump bail but fled to save his life when faced with an attempt on it.
“The release is long overdue. Nobody expected him to endure this long. They intended to kill him before he escaped. It is well-known that he did not jump bail but fled to avoid being killed,” the monarch stated.
Igbo youths, under the aegis of the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), also voiced their support for the Southeast governors' efforts to engage President Tinubu in pressing for Kanu’s release. COSEYL believes that Kanu's release will promote national cohesion and restore peace in the Southeast region.
Goodluck Ibem, the President General of COSEYL, emphasized that Kanu's release is crucial for the region's security and peace. He argued that freeing Kanu would undermine criminal elements exploiting his incarceration under the guise of IPOB and revitalize local businesses and agriculture affected by insecurity.
“Kanu’s release is a matter of urgent national importance deserving high-level government attention. It will open doors for dialogue and peaceful resolution of longstanding issues in the Southeast, de-escalating tensions and fostering constructive conversations between the government and other agitation groups,” Ibem stated.
He urged President Tinubu to consider releasing Kanu to restore peace, unity, progress, national cohesion, and integration. Ibem also called on the governors and other Igbo leaders to persist in their efforts until Kanu is finally released.
