In a significant move aimed at transforming the livestock sector, President Bola Tinubu announced the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development on Tuesday. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
While President Tinubu did not disclose the name of the Minister who will head the new ministry, it is anticipated that he will submit a nominee to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and other cabinet members.
This development follows President Tinubu's approval on September 15, 2023, of the establishment of a Presidential Committee dedicated to the reform of the livestock industry. The committee aims to provide long-term solutions to the recurring conflicts between herders and farmers in Nigeria. The decision to form the committee was based on the recommendations from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria.
