Nigerian dancer and choreographer Kafayat Shafau, known as Kaffy, has called on government authorities at all levels to broaden their focus within the creative industry to foster wealth creation.
In an interview with NAN, Kaffy emphasized the need to elevate other sectors of the creative industry such as dance and fashion to harness their economic potential.
While acknowledging Nigeria's existing policies that primarily support film and music, Kaffy highlighted the untapped potential of dance across various sectors. She stressed that dance can be monetized extensively, citing its applications in education, healthcare, advertising, and beyond.
"Dance plays a pivotal role across industries. In the healthcare sector, for instance, dancers serve as fitness trainers and physiotherapists, benefiting from its therapeutic applications for individuals with cognitive disorders," she explained.
Kaffy urged the government to allocate more resources to the creative sector and create a conducive environment for practitioners to thrive. She proposed that government policies should compel institutions to allocate a portion of their corporate social responsibility towards supporting the creative arts.
She also expressed concerns about the declining standard of education in Nigeria and advocated for integrating dance into the educational curriculum. According to Kaffy, incorporating dance can significantly enhance learning outcomes for schoolchildren in line with contemporary societal needs.
"Dance, as a vital component of the creative industry, enhances cognitive abilities among children. It should be integrated into our educational framework," she emphasized.
The creative industry encompasses a wide spectrum of economic activities including art, design, fashion, film, music, publishing, software development, and more, all contributing to economic growth and cultural development.
