Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has pledged to advocate for the establishment of a youth secretariat within the FCT Administration (FCTA). Wike's commitment came during a town hall meeting held in Abuja on Saturday, where he addressed concerns from residents regarding hunger and hardship.
The town hall meeting was organized by the FCTA in an effort to discourage participation in the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1. Youth representatives at the meeting voiced their support for the creation of a dedicated youth secretariat to better address youth development and empowerment issues.
Wike assured attendees that he would advocate for the proposal with President Bola Tinubu. "I do know that if I send a memo to him to create a youth secretariat, Mr. President will create it," Wike stated. He encouraged youth representatives to draft and submit a memo outlining their request, which he would then forward to the President.
The minister emphasized that once approved, the Youth Secretariat would be responsible for determining and implementing youth empowerment programs. He highlighted that President Tinubu has already demonstrated his commitment to youth inclusion through various appointments within the FCTA, including the positions of Coordinator of the Satellite Development Department, Mandate Secretaries of Area Councils, and Legal Services.
Wike also underscored the importance of maintaining peace and order, explaining that the town hall meeting aimed to build consensus among FCT stakeholders and prevent any disruptions that might arise from participating in the upcoming protest.
