Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has clarified his decision to operate from his personal residence in Nvosi Umuehim, citing the absence of a suitable Government House in the state. Otti made the remarks on Saturday during the inauguration of the new office for the Chairman of Arochukwu Local Government Area (LGA).
In his statement, Otti revealed that previous administrations, including those of Senators Theodore Orji and Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, had utilized rented office spaces for government operations, many of which are now in disrepair. The incomplete Government House at Ogurube Layout, initiated by past governors, has been criticized by Otti as inadequate for the state’s needs.
Otti has committed to constructing a “befitting Government House” by the end of the year, promising to replace the current dilapidated structures with a more appropriate facility to serve Abia's educated populace. His decision to reside in his private home was driven by the urgency to address the state’s governance infrastructure issues.
The governor also addressed his controversial decision to appoint non-politician Mayors as Transition Committee (TC) Chairmen for local government councils. Despite some criticism, Otti expressed satisfaction with the performance of these appointees, including several millionaires and professionals based abroad.
He praised Chief Joe Aru, the TC Chairman of Arochukwu LGA, for his longstanding support and shared vision for the state's development since 2014. During the inauguration, Aru highlighted the new Arochukwu LGA Headquarters as a symbol of the community's commitment to progress and development. He assured that the new office would play a crucial role in local government operations and community engagement.
Aru also extended his gratitude to Governor Otti for the opportunity to serve and pledged to tackle key issues facing the LGA.
