Kemi Badenoch Re-elected in North West Essex Amidst Conservative Party Setback

Kemi Badenoch, of British-Nigerian descent, successfully defended her seat in North West Essex despite a challenging general election for the Conservative Party. She had served as Secretary of State for Business and Trade in Rishi Sunak’s cabinet, which faced dismissal by the Labour Party.

Badenoch secured victory in a closely contested race, garnering 19,360 votes, which accounted for 35.6% of the total votes cast—a decrease of 26.1% from her previous majority. Her closest rival, Labour candidate Issy Waite, received 16,750 votes. Meanwhile, Reform UK’s Grant StClair-Armstrong, who resigned from his party due to past associations with the far-right British National Party (BNP), received 7,668 votes.

According to local reports, Liberal Democrat Smita Rajesh obtained 6,055 votes, and Green candidate Edward Gildea received 2,846 votes. Independent candidates also contested, with Andrew David Green securing 852 votes, Erik Bonino receiving 699 votes, and Niko Omilana gathering 156 votes. Voter turnout was notable at 68% in the constituency, formerly known as Saffron Walden.

Born on January 2, 1980, in Wimbledon, London, Kemi Badenoch is the daughter of Nigerian Yoruba parents—her father, Femi Adegoke, a GP, and her mother, Feyi Adegoke, a professor of physiology. She spent her early years in Lagos, Nigeria, and the United States, returning to the UK at 16 due to Nigeria’s political and economic challenges.

In her parliamentary debut speech, Badenoch, though a UK citizen by birth, described herself as “to all intents and purposes a first-generation immigrant,” emphasizing her multicultural background and experiences.
