Minister of Power Vows Sanctions for Non-Performing Agencies Amid Sector Challenges

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has issued a stern warning to non-performing agencies and parastatals under the power ministry, promising strict sanctions during a recent meeting in Abuja.

Adelabu delivered this message during a gathering where performance contracts were signed with various agencies within the sector. Emphasizing the urgency of improved performance, he underscored that assessments would be conducted regularly, not just at year-end or quarterly intervals.

“We will not wait until the end of the year or end of the quarter before we start assessing ourselves. We need to get involved in the work on how you are progressing to achieve your final targets for the quarter,” Adelabu stated.

He stressed a top-down approach to performance evaluation, where both rewards and sanctions would mirror achievements at all levels within the ministry and its affiliated bodies.

“Just like the performance delivery is top-down, the reward will also be top-down on achievement. Then, sanctions too, will be top-down. Depending on the sanctions that Mr. President is going to mete out to a non-performing minister and a non-performing council, we will determine the sanctions that will be meted out to everybody involved here,” he affirmed.

The Minister’s remarks come at a critical time for Nigeria’s power sector, grappling with persistent challenges across its distribution, generation, and transmission segments. In 2024 alone, the country has experienced multiple instances of nationwide blackouts due to collapses in the National Grid.

Despite recent tariff increases in April and July 2024, aimed at improving service delivery for Band A customers who are supposed to receive 20-24 hours of electricity daily, many Nigerians continue to endure erratic power supply.

The Minister’s commitment to enforcing accountability and efficiency within the power sector signals a proactive stance amidst ongoing operational difficulties. As stakeholders monitor developments, the effectiveness of these measures in addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges will be closely observed.
