The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Ogun Command has issued a strong warning to Nigerians regarding the potential dangers of careless social media use. In an interview with NAN on Friday in Abeokuta, Mr. Dyke Ogbonnaya, the spokesperson for the Ogun Command, highlighted the risks associated with indiscriminately showcasing personal lifestyles on social media platforms.
Ogbonnaya advised the public to avoid flaunting their achievements, such as new homes, vehicles, designer clothes, and other symbols of wealth on social media. He explained that this behavior could inadvertently provide criminals with valuable information about potential targets. “Displaying these items provides hints to criminals,” Ogbonnaya stated. He noted that approximately 40 percent of kidnappings are facilitated through social media interactions.
Criminals often exploit social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to lure victims with fake job offers, travel opportunities, and dating schemes. According to Ogbonnaya, kidnappers continuously develop new strategies to capture their victims, driven by greed and the desire for quick financial gains.
The spokesperson condemned the increasing incidents of kidnappings and robberies and reassured the public that the NSCDC remains committed to working closely with the police to combat these crimes. He praised the collaborative efforts of security agencies and urged Nigerians to actively report any information about criminal hideouts to the authorities.
“The security agencies need the cooperation of Nigerians to win this battle,” Ogbonnaya emphasized, calling for increased vigilance and responsible use of social media to enhance personal safety and community security.
