The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has advised all Igbos in Nigeria to abstain from participating in the planned nationwide protests against President Bola Tinubu. In a statement issued by its Secretary General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, on Tuesday, the apex Igbo organization instructed Igbos both domestically and internationally to avoid the protests scheduled from August 1st to 10th, 2024.
Ohanaeze highlighted that the prevailing security challenges in the Southeast region pose significant risks to the safe conduct of protests and riots. The statement stressed that any planned protests in the Southeast are hereby canceled, and Igbos are directed not to participate. The group warned that such protests could worsen the security situation, providing opportunities for criminal elements and external detractors to exploit and create further chaos.
The organization expressed concerns about Igbos being perceived as scapegoats in the forthcoming protests, emphasizing the need for safety and security. Ohanaeze called on Igbo residents in the 19 northern states and the southwest regions to avoid the protests to ensure their well-being. The group recommended that business activities in these regions remain suspended as a precautionary measure.
Ohanaeze reiterated that the primary focus for the Southeast region is the release of Nnamdi Kanu, affirming their commitment to this cause over participating in nationwide protests. The organization conveyed that Igbos will not engage in protests against President Tinubu, hoping for reciprocation of goodwill from the President, particularly concerning Kanu's release.
Ohanaeze issued a stern warning to non-Igbo enforcers of the nationwide protests, making it clear that the Southeast will not partake in the demonstrations. The group pledged its full support to the Southeast Governors to ensure robust security measures during the protest period and encouraged Igbos in the region to continue their regular business activities throughout August 2024.
In conclusion, Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of the Igbo people, advocating for peace and prudence as the best approach to safeguard the interests of the Southeast region. The organization reiterated its stance on prioritizing the release of Nnamdi Kanu and maintaining stability in the region.
