Peoples Democratic Party Sweeps Delta Local Government Elections, Except One Seat

 The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a landslide victory in the Delta Local Government election held on Saturday, clinching all 25 local government chairmanship seats and nearly sweeping all councillorship seats, except one claimed by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oshimili North Local Government Area (LGA).

Dr. Jerry Agbaike, the Chief Electoral Officer and Chairman of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), announced the election results from the commission’s headquarters in Asaba on Sunday.

Agbaike noted that the election did not take place in Udu LGA as the PDP chairmanship candidate was returned unopposed. He proceeded to issue Certificates of Return to the newly elected local government chairmen, marking the conclusion of the electoral process.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, along with other senior PDP leaders, had earlier expressed confidence in their party’s prospects. Following his own participation in the voting process on Saturday, Governor Oborevwori praised the election as transparent, free, and fair, predicting victory for the PDP candidates.

Addressing the issue of local government autonomy, Governor Oborevwori emphasized Delta State’s commitment, stating that the recent Supreme Court judgment regarding local government funds does not affect the state. He affirmed that his administration supports autonomy for local governments and highlighted efforts to ensure transparency in financial matters through mechanisms like the Joint Accounts Allocation Committee (JAAC).

“As a former speaker, we championed the cause of autonomy for the legislature and judiciary. The judgment from the Supreme Court does not impact us here in Delta State, as we have consistently ensured local government funds remain untouched and transparent,” Oborevwori explained.

He further underscored the state government’s role in clearing debts owed by local governments and reiterated that the JAAC functions primarily to monitor financial transparency rather than control local government funds directly.

The resounding victory of the PDP in the Delta Local Government election underscores the party’s dominance in the state’s political landscape, reaffirming its stronghold in local governance.
