Kaduna Police Ban Ashura Procession by Proscribed IMN, Citing Security Concerns

 The Kaduna State Police has issued a prohibition on all unauthorized gatherings by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shi’ites, including their planned Ashura procession, according to ASP Mansir Hassan, the police spokesperson in Kaduna.

In a statement released on Sunday, Hassan emphasized the ban on any form of illegal protests within the state. The decision follows intelligence reports indicating that IMN members intend to hold a procession to commemorate the 2024 Islamic Ashura day.

Hassan underscored the history of violent incidents associated with such rituals, including property destruction, injuries, and fatalities. He stressed that IMN, which has been outlawed by law, must refrain from pursuing the procession.

The police commissioner, Mr. Ali Dabigi, warned that stringent legal measures would be enforced against any individual or group, particularly members of the banned IMN, found violating the ban. He reassured law-abiding citizens to continue their lawful activities without fear, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the current peace in the state against the disruptions caused by a minority of dissenters.
