Two individuals lost their lives when a petrol-laden tanker exploded at Imope Village in Oru Ijebu along the Ijebu-Ode-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The incident occurred around 9:30 AM on Saturday, July 13, 2024, when the driver of the tanker, bearing the number plate T 623 LA X, lost control of the vehicle. According to SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, the tanker was transporting 45,000 liters of petrol when it veered off the road and overturned, resulting in a catastrophic explosion.
The driver, Salau Semiu, and his assistant, Saheed, tragically lost their lives in the explosion. "The truck was carrying 45,000 liters of petrol loaded from Pinnacle Petrol Depot in Lagos and was traveling from Ijebu Ode towards Ibadan, Oyo State," Odutola stated.
Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, with the Divisional Police Officer of Oru Division mobilizing traffic personnel to halt vehicular movement. The Ogun State Fire Service quickly arrived and managed to extinguish the inferno.
Photographic documentation of the scene was carried out, and the bodies of Salau Semiu and Saheed were taken to the State General Hospital mortuary. Emergency services, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, OGS TRACE, and other security stakeholders, were also mobilized to manage the situation and clear the roadway.
