Civil Society Group Urges President Tinubu to Reform Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector

The civil society organization, Advocates of Justice in Africa (AJA), has called on President Bola Tinubu to extend the recent shake-ups in Nigeria's security agencies to the oil and gas sector.

Earlier this week, President Tinubu approved the appointments of Adeola Ajayi as the new Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Mohammed Mohammed as the new Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). These changes have been widely welcomed, particularly following the departure of Yusuf Bichi.

In a statement issued by the group’s convener, Johnson Ali Usman, AJA praised the new appointments as a "step in the right direction." Usman urged President Tinubu to apply similar reforms to the oil and gas sector, highlighting ongoing issues of corruption and mismanagement.

The group has called for the removal and replacement of leadership within the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). They argue that these changes are crucial to addressing inefficiencies and corruption that have plagued the sector.

Usman criticized the sector's inability to manage resources effectively, pointing to problems such as fuel scarcity, pipeline vandalism, and oil theft, which have resulted in significant financial losses. He emphasized that despite the sector's potential to boost economic growth, a lack of transparency and accountability has led to widespread corruption and mismanagement.

AJA's statement reflects growing concerns about the need for comprehensive reform to ensure that Nigeria’s oil and gas sector operates efficiently and transparently.
