Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has announced that the newly planned 6,000-capacity arena in Benin City will be named in honor of global afrobeats sensation, Rema. The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony of the project on Wednesday, where Rema joined the governor to lay the first block.
Governor Obaseki shared the news via his social media platform X, stating, “It was a pleasure to have our global music icon, Rema, join me for the groundbreaking ceremony of the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, to be named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ will be situated at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.”
Obaseki highlighted the multi-purpose nature of the arena, noting that it will be designed to host a variety of events including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings. “The arena will be a major draw for visitors, allowing them to experience the rich culture of Edo State while creating job opportunities for our youth,” he said.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has consistently celebrated his roots through his music, promoting the legacy of the ancient Benin Empire. The afrobeats star recently returned to Benin for his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium and was part of the groundbreaking event.
The artist’s latest hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, is a tribute to his hometown, further solidifying his status as a proud ambassador of Edo State. The new Edo Arena, named in his honor, aims to become a landmark venue that will enhance cultural tourism and youth engagement in the region.
