Joshua Cheptegei Triumphs in Olympic 10,000m, Setting New Record at Stade de France

Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei delivered an exceptional performance in the men's 10,000m final at the Stade de France on Friday, securing gold with an Olympic record time of 26:43.14. This remarkable achievement not only earned him the top spot but also surpassed the previous record of 27:07.17, set by Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele during the 2008 Beijing Games.

Cheptegei, a three-time world champion and silver medalist from the Tokyo Games, demonstrated resilience and tactical acumen to fend off strong competition from Ethiopia. The Ethiopian team, including Berihu Aregawi and Selemon Barega, employed aggressive tactics throughout the race, with multiple surges designed to challenge their rivals.

The race began with an early acceleration by Barega and his teammate Yomif Kejelcha, which split the field and set a fast pace. As the laps progressed, the pack of 25 runners gradually thinned out, with Cheptegei and his teammate Jacob Kiplimo facing a challenging race due to Martin Magengo Kiprotich's early dropout.

Aregawi took the lead in the final kilometers, pushing the pace and setting up a thrilling conclusion. As the final lap approached, Cheptegei made a decisive move to the front, leaving the rest of the pack behind. American Grant Fisher, who finished with a time of 26:43.46, clinched the bronze, marking the U.S.'s first 10,000m medal since 1968.

Despite intense competition, Cheptegei's tactical superiority and stamina ensured his victory, with Barega finishing seventh in 26:44.48 and Kejelcha just ahead of him in sixth place. Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed and Kenya’s Benard Kibet rounded out the top five.

Cheptegei's victory at the Stade de France not only highlights his exceptional talent but also marks a significant moment in Olympic athletics, showcasing a thrilling race and setting a new standard for future competitors.
