British singer Lily Allen has shared a surprising story about why she returned a puppy she adopted during the coronavirus pandemic. On a recent episode of her podcast, Miss Her?, Allen recounted the incident involving the adopted puppy, named Mary, who caused significant disruption by chewing up her family’s passports.
Allen, who adopted the puppy in 2020, explained that Mary not only destroyed her passport but also the passports of her two daughters, Ethel, 12, and Marnie, 11. The destruction of the documents led to a costly and complicated process to replace them, particularly challenging during the pandemic.
“The dog ate all three of our passports, which had our visas in them. I cannot tell you how much money it cost me to get everything replaced because it was during COVID,” Allen said. She noted that the incident caused significant delays, including the inability for her children to visit their father in England for several months.
Allen also described the puppy as poorly behaved, adding that the passport destruction was the final straw after a series of issues with the dog. “I just couldn’t look at her—I was like, ‘You’ve ruined my life,’” she admitted.
Allen and her husband, actor David Harbour, are now considering adopting a new puppy, though the incident with Mary has left them cautious.
In response to the story, animal rights organization PETA has issued an open letter to Allen, urging her not to adopt another dog. PETA emphasized that pets should not be treated as disposable and should not be returned or discarded when they become inconvenient.
Allen currently resides in New York with Harbour, while her children, from a previous marriage to Sam Cooper, remain in the UK.
