NBBF President Musa Kida Reveals Key Factor Behind D’Tigress’ Historic 2024 Olympic Performance

Musa Kida, President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), has shed light on the factors contributing to D’Tigress’ remarkable performance at the 2024 Olympic Games. The Nigerian women's basketball team made history by advancing to the quarter-finals, marking the first time an African team has reached this stage in Olympic basketball.

D’Tigress secured impressive victories against basketball powerhouses Australia and Canada during the group stage, establishing themselves as formidable competitors. Despite their eventual exit in the quarter-finals after a loss to defending champions, the United States, the team’s performance was celebrated as a major milestone for African basketball.

In an interview with NTA, Kida attributed the team’s success to a decision to keep NBBF board members from interfering in player selection. He emphasized the importance of allowing head coach Rena Wakama and the technical crew to have full control over team decisions.

“We made it a priority to prevent board members from imposing their choices on the coach,” Kida stated. “While they are free to suggest names and provide input, the final decision on team selection is left entirely to the coach and the technical crew.”

This approach, Kida noted, allowed the team to focus on their preparation and performance without outside pressures, leading to their historic achievement at the Olympics.
