In response to escalating violence during the ongoing nationwide protests, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has issued a nationwide red alert. This directive applies to all Zonal Commanders, Heads of Formations, and state commandants across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The heightened state of readiness follows reports of peaceful demonstrations that have spiraled into violent confrontations in various regions. CSC Babawale Afolabi, the National Public Relations Officer for the NSCDC, revealed in a statement on Friday that the decision came after observing a troubling trend of aggression against security personnel and public property during the protests.
Dr. Audi, who personally monitored the situation in Abuja, expressed grave concern over the attacks on security agencies assigned to protect both government assets and the public. The NSCDC has issued multiple warnings to protestors to avoid violence, vandalism, and looting, yet these issues have been reported in several states.
Notably, violent incidents have occurred in states like Kaduna, Kano, Yobe, and Gombe, where demonstrators have reportedly targeted security forces and public infrastructure. In Katsina, an NSCDC operational vehicle was set on fire by protesters, and several officers sustained injuries.
In Kano, NSCDC personnel arrested 32 individuals involved in vandalism and looting. These arrests were made as the protesters attempted to steal goods valued in the thousands of naira. The Commandant General emphasized that those apprehended will face thorough investigation and legal consequences.
Acting Deputy Commandant General Phillip Ayuba, representing Dr. Audi, has instructed all officers to uphold professionalism and civility while managing the protests. The NSCDC is firm on its stance against any form of violence or property destruction, warning that such actions will be met with stringent legal action.
As the #EndBadGovernance protests, which began on August 1, continue across the country, the NSCDC remains vigilant, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining order and safeguarding national assets amid the widespread unrest.
