NYSC DG Uncovers Fraudulent Mobilization Case Involving University of Calabar

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has revealed a startling case of alleged fraud involving the University of Calabar in Cross River State.

According to Brigadier General Ahmed, a bread seller who had never attended the University of Calabar was among those recently mobilized for the NYSC scheme. This disclosure is part of the NYSC’s ongoing efforts to clean up its mobilization process and ensure that only qualified graduates are enlisted. The scheme has recently voided 101 certificates, bringing the total number of invalidated certificates to 178.

Brigadier General Ahmed praised the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, for her integrity in bringing the issue to light. He explained that Professor Obi alerted the NYSC after discovering that unqualified individuals were being mobilized as graduates from her institution.

“The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar reported that she observed some names on the institution’s list that should not have been there,” Ahmed said. “She checked the list the school provided, and I assured her that their certificates would be invalidated. Previously, a bread seller was mobilized on the graduation list from the same institution. There are bad actors in many places who generate matriculation numbers and courses for their candidates.”

The NYSC DG emphasized that the scheme would continue to implement stringent measures to maintain the integrity of the service and protect the interests of genuine graduates across the country.
