Ohio Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for the Murders of His Three Sons

Chad Doerman, 33, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the tragic murders of his three young sons at their Ohio home in June 2023. Clermont County Judge Karen Kalifut issued the sentence on Friday, August 2, following Doerman’s guilty plea to three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault.

The sentence includes three consecutive life terms for the deaths of 7-year-old Clayton Doerman, 4-year-old Hunter Doerman, and 3-year-old Chase Doerman. Additionally, Doerman received 16 more years for the assaults on his former wife, Laura Doerman, and her daughter.

Prosecutor Mark Tekulve had initially planned to pursue the death penalty but opted for a life sentence instead, citing the ongoing trauma faced by the surviving family members. Tekulve explained, "My job, as I saw it this week, was to relieve them of that additional agony," emphasizing the impact on the grieving family.

The horrific murders occurred on June 15, 2023, in Monroe Township, approximately 75 miles west of Columbus. According to prosecutors, Doerman meticulously planned the killings and pursued one of the boys into a field after the child attempted to escape.

Defense attorneys argued that Doerman was suffering from severe mental illness at the time of the crimes. Despite this, the court imposed the maximum sentence allowable under the circumstances.

In a poignant statement read in court, Laura Doerman, the children’s mother and Doerman’s ex-wife, expressed profound grief and devastation. "I would do anything to push them on the swing, cover them up one more time and hear their little ways of saying, 'I love you,'" she said tearfully. She added, "Grief will never go away because it is all the love that is left with no place to go."

Following the sentencing, Laura Doerman issued a statement through the prosecutors, affirming her agreement with the life sentence. She remarked, "No punishment will ever bring my boys back," and expressed her gratitude to the legal team and first responders. She requested privacy for her family as they continue to mourn and asked that the boys be remembered for their joyful lives before the tragedy.

Local resident Alice Williamson, reflecting on the community's sorrow, stated, "This is a devastating tragedy that no family should ever have to endure. My heart breaks for the Doerman family, and I hope they can find some measure of peace and healing in the years to come."

Prosecutor Tekulve is scheduled to provide further details about the case at a news conference on Monday. The murders have deeply affected the local community and garnered national attention, underscoring the profound impact of this tragic event.
