In a tense confrontation early Friday morning, Nigeria Police operatives used teargas to disperse a group of protesters near Berger Bridge in Abuja. The incident occurred as the demonstrators gathered despite a recent court order aimed at restricting their activities to the MKO Abiola National Stadium.
Witnesses, including passersby and motorists, voiced their frustration, accusing the police of excessive force. The unrest in Abuja comes amid widespread national protests against various government issues, which have been ongoing across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The clash follows a recent development where an Abuja High Court granted a request to limit protest activities to the designated stadium. On Thursday night, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, called on protesters to adhere to the court’s ruling. However, protest leaders have claimed they were not officially notified of the court order, leading to confusion and continued demonstrations in other areas.
The situation highlights the ongoing tension between authorities and protesters as the nationwide unrest persists.
