Biden to Address Global Leaders Amid Ongoing Conflicts

With only four months left in his presidency, U.S. President Joe Biden is set to address world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly on September 24. His speech comes at a critical time, as conflicts continue in Ukraine, Gaza, and tensions are rising in Lebanon.

The Pentagon announced on Monday that it would deploy a small number of additional troops to the Middle East as a precautionary measure. Biden's presidency has faced significant foreign policy challenges, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the recent violence in Gaza following the Hamas attacks in southern Israel on October 7.

A senior official from the Biden administration indicated that the president's speech will highlight what he views as key achievements during his time in office. It will also serve as a platform to urge the international community to support Ukraine and seek a diplomatic resolution in the Middle East.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Biden would outline his vision for global cooperation in tackling major issues and upholding fundamental principles like the U.N. Charter.

Later this week, Biden is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington to discuss a new peace plan for Ukraine. This plan is likely to focus on increasing military support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict.

Jean-Pierre reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting Ukraine's efforts for a just and lasting peace, promising to provide the necessary military equipment to strengthen its position.

Biden's address at the U.N. will be the highlight of his two-day visit to New York, which will also include a speech on climate issues and a meeting with Vietnamese President To Lam.

The challenges of Ukraine, Russia, Gaza, Iran, and China are expected to remain significant issues for Biden's successor, whether it is Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump.
