Ahead of the Kano State Local Government Council elections set for October 2024, the Kano State High Court has issued an injunction preventing the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 19 other political parties from obstructing the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from collecting nomination fees.
KANSIEC had previously set the nomination fees at N10 million for chairmanship candidates and N5 million for councillorship candidates. These fees sparked protests from political parties, who described them as excessively high. The parties sought legal intervention, arguing that the fees should be reduced, especially with the elections approaching in October.
After hearing arguments from the legal representatives of both KANSIEC and the political parties, the court ruled in favor of KANSIEC. The court granted an interim order allowing the commission to continue with its duties, including collecting nomination fees, organizing, and overseeing the elections.
The court also restrained the political parties from taking any action that could disrupt the election process. This ruling ensures that preparations for the local government elections will proceed without delay.
The case has been adjourned to October 10, 2024, for further hearings on the matter.
