Dave Hancock, the former spokesperson and security guard for Kyle Rittenhouse, has expressed regret over his former client after discovering disturbing text messages Rittenhouse sent before the fatal shootings during the 2020 Kenosha protests. Hancock shared his insights during a documentary titled The Trials of Kyle Rittenhouse on Law & Crime, which aired on Friday.
According to Hancock, Rittenhouse sent text messages just two weeks before the Kenosha shootings, stating his intent to “fucking murder” shoplifters outside a CVS pharmacy. These texts came to light during a civil lawsuit filed by the family of one of the men killed by Rittenhouse, Joseph Rosenbaum, demanding wrongful death damages.
Hancock, who once believed Rittenhouse’s claims of self-defense, said his perspective shifted after learning of the texts. "This is where his head’s at,” Hancock explained, reflecting on the mindset of the then-17-year-old Rittenhouse. He added that while he initially saw Rittenhouse as a scared and naive kid, the newly surfaced messages revealed a more troubling side.
In August 2020, Rittenhouse traveled from Antioch, Illinois, to Kenosha, Wisconsin, during protests sparked by the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Armed with a rifle, he shot and killed Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, while also injuring a third man. Rittenhouse was later acquitted of all criminal charges in November 2021, claiming self-defense.
Despite the criminal acquittal, the civil lawsuit remains ongoing, and Hancock’s revelations have reignited discussions about Rittenhouse’s actions and his state of mind leading up to the shootings.
The Trials of Kyle Rittenhouse will be rebroadcast on Law & Crime, available on cable and streaming platforms.
