La Liga Fan Sentenced to Prison for Racially Abusing Samuel Chukwueze and Vinicius Jr.

A football fan in Spain has been sentenced to one year in prison after being found guilty of racially abusing Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze and Real Madrid star Vinicius Jnr in separate incidents.

The fan hurled racial abuse at Samuel Chukwueze, then a Villarreal player, during Mallorca's La Liga match on February 18. He had previously targeted Vinicius Jnr during Real Madrid’s game against Mallorca on February 5, 2023.

A Spanish court issued two six-month prison terms, one for each incident, and imposed a three-year stadium ban on the supporter.

Vinicius Jr. has been vocal about being subjected to repeated racial abuse by rival fans, recently stating that Spain should not host the 2030 World Cup unless stronger actions are taken against racism.

However, La Liga president Javier Tebas dismissed Vinicius' comments as "incoherent." Tebas emphasized that while the abuse is unacceptable, he agrees with Vinicius that Spain is not a racist country.
