Thirteen former Boko Haram fighters have reportedly fled with rifles and motorcycles provided to them by the Borno State government as part of a rehabilitation program. According to report, these individuals were among thousands of ex-Boko Haram fighters and their families who surrendered to the government and were incorporated into military efforts against the insurgency.
The escape occurred between September 1 and 2, with eight of the fighters fleeing their camp in Mafa on the first day, followed by five more the next day. Malik Samuel, a researcher with expertise on jihadi groups in northeastern Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region, revealed that the escapees contacted Abdullahi Ishaq, the government’s special adviser on security matters, issuing threats of renewed violence.
A video has since surfaced, showing the escapees celebrating and brandishing rifles, raising concerns about potential attacks. The state government has yet to officially respond to the situation.
