Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has expressed optimism that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), could pave the way for peace in Nigeria's South-East region.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Agbese voiced his belief that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has an opportunity to capitalize on efforts made by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and other notable figures advocating for Kanu’s release. He emphasized that these efforts, aimed at fostering reconciliation and addressing grievances in the South-East, are rooted in a desire for lasting peace in the region.
Agbese noted that his involvement, along with that of others, in pushing for Kanu’s release is purely motivated by the need for peace. He praised Deputy Speaker Kalu, a native of the region, for diplomatically championing Kanu's release. According to Agbese, this move could address long-standing perceptions of marginalization among the South-East population.
“One of the misconceptions fueling separatist sentiments is the belief in marginalization. I think Kanu’s release could help dispel these feelings,” Agbese remarked. He further stated that Kanu’s freedom could enhance the sense of equality and trust in the current administration, especially given President Tinubu’s demonstrated commitment to national unity and inclusion.
Acknowledging Kanu's controversial past, Agbese suggested that the current climate of national unity and dialogue offers a unique opportunity for reconciliation. He also commended Deputy Speaker Kalu for his dedication to peacebuilding in the region, highlighting Kalu's role in fostering dialogue and creating a conducive environment for healing and growth.
“The release of Nnamdi Kanu would mark a significant step towards addressing past grievances and promoting national unity. We urge the government to consider this appeal and work towards a peaceful resolution," Agbese added.
He also noted that Kanu has reportedly agreed to support the "Peace in the South-East" initiative led by Deputy Speaker Kalu. Agbese, along with his colleagues, voiced their full support for Kanu's release, trusting in Kalu's leadership to advocate for the regeneration of the region.
