Simon Ekpa, a prominent Biafra activist and leader of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE), has revealed that he sacrificed his political career in Finland to focus on the struggle for Biafra's self-determination.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Thursday, Ekpa emphasized that his dedication to the cause of Biafra's independence has been his top priority for several years. According to him, the goal of liberating Biafra from what he describes as marginalization by the Nigerian government is more important to him than any other pursuit.
"For the past years, my focus has been on the actualization of Biafra self-rule. There is nothing more sacred to me than the cause of liberating Biafra from the oppression we face," Ekpa stated.
He also declared that he would not participate in the upcoming election in Finland, where he has been politically active since 2012, choosing instead to concentrate fully on the Biafra liberation movement.
“I have decided not to take part in the coming election and focus on Biafra Liberation in Finland. I have served my people, community, and region since 2012," he added.
Ekpa’s announcement comes as he continues to criticize the Nigerian government despite ongoing efforts to have him extradited. The activist has been vocal in his opposition to the Nigerian authorities, even announcing that the official declaration of Biafra will take place on December 2, 2024.
This development follows the Nigerian government’s 2021 rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who remains in custody despite widespread calls for his release. Ekpa, a staunch supporter of Kanu’s cause, remains steadfast in his commitment to Biafra's independence despite the challenges he faces.
