Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen have provided an update on Nigerian international striker Victor Boniface following his involvement in a car accident in Germany on Sunday, October 20. The incident occurred just hours after Boniface played a key role in Leverkusen’s 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
The 23-year-old Super Eagles forward shared now-deleted videos and images of the damaged vehicle on social media, captioning them with "God is the greatest" and "God says my time hasn’t come."
According to German tabloid Bild, Boniface was not driving during the crash but was a passenger. The accident happened on the A3 highway between Bad Camberg and Idstein while Boniface and the driver were heading to Frankfurt Airport.
The Bild report detailed, "Boniface was on the A3 between Bad Camberg and Idstein on his way to Frankfurt Airport shortly after seven on a training-free Sunday. The Mercedes collided with a truck when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue, causing the car to skid from the middle lane into the truck, even overturning."
Leverkusen confirmed that Boniface sustained only minor hand injuries, and both he and the driver were treated at a hospital before being discharged. The club reassured fans, stating, “He is fine,” bringing relief to the football community.
Images posted by Boniface showed a minor injury on his arm, giving a glimpse of the seriousness of the crash. Despite the frightening accident, the club remains hopeful that Boniface will recover quickly and be available for their upcoming UEFA Champions League match against Brest on Wednesday, October 23.
The accident came after a challenging week for Boniface, who, along with the Nigerian national team, faced significant delays during their trip to Libya for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, leading to a boycott of the match.
With Boniface recovering well, Leverkusen remains optimistic about his continued impact on their impressive season.
