Man Fatally Mauled by Employer’s Pit Bull in South Africa, Police Launch Inquest

Police in Mpumalanga, South Africa, have opened an inquest following the tragic death of a 58-year-old man who was fatally attacked by his employer’s pit bull in Marapyane, Mmametlhake, in the early hours of Friday, October 18.

According to police spokesperson Col. Donald Mdhluli, the victim, who lived on his employer's property and was responsible for caring for the pit bulls, was attacked after returning home late on Thursday night. The dogs, typically confined and only released between 1 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. to patrol the premises, reportedly turned on the man as he entered the property.

“It is suspected that he was attacked by the dog when he returned, leading to his death,” Mdhluli stated. A security guard later discovered the man's lifeless body with the pit bull still nearby. Medical personnel arrived at the scene and confirmed the man had died from multiple injuries sustained in the attack.

The employer quickly alerted authorities. Upon arrival, police found the man’s body with severe injuries. The pit bull responsible for the attack was euthanized by the SPCA on Saturday, October 19.

Mpumalanga’s acting provincial police commissioner, Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed his condolences to the deceased's family and called for calm while the investigation is underway. “We ask for calm during this time and urge the public to allow the investigation team to thoroughly examine the incident without interference,” Mkhwanazi said.
