Federal Government Unveils New Curriculum for Basic and Senior Secondary Education

The Federal Government has announced that under the new curriculum set to be implemented for Basic and Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria, every student must graduate with at least two skills. This initiative was revealed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, at the 68th National Council on Education (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, October 10.

According to Prof. Mamman, the new curriculum aims to blend knowledge, skills, and values, with a strong emphasis on skill development. This focus will enable students to connect their acquired skills with the economy, ensuring they can lead productive lives upon graduation.

He acknowledged that the current curriculum is at risk of becoming outdated due to rapid technological advancements disrupting various industries, including education. "A well-designed and effective curriculum is essential for sustainable development, quality, and relevance in education," Prof. Mamman stated. He emphasized that this is why the government is prioritizing curriculum reform within the broader educational framework.

The Ministry of Education is implementing the Education Transformation Agenda, a comprehensive plan by the current administration to overhaul the sector. The agenda focuses on improving the quality of learning, fostering skill development, and ensuring access and equity in education.

Prof. Mamman also reaffirmed the government's commitment to providing inclusive and equitable quality education for all learners at every level. He emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to upholding international protocols, conventions, and treaties aimed at protecting learners, teachers, and educational institutions from harm, ensuring a safe and conducive environment for education in the country.
