FIFA Bans Como Star Marco Curto for Racial Abuse in Pre-Season Match

Marco Curto, the Como football player, has received a significant ban from FIFA after being found guilty of racially abusing Wolverhampton Wanderers' star, Hwang Hee-chan, during a pre-season friendly match in July.

The incident occurred when Wolves played against the Italian team in Marbella, where Curto exhibited discriminatory behavior towards Hwang. Following the match, Wolves consulted with the FA to discuss filing a formal complaint, as UEFA could not intervene due to the unofficial nature of the game. The South Korean Football Association also reached out to FIFA to voice their concerns regarding the matter.

In response, Como issued a statement suggesting that Wolves had exaggerated the significance of the incident, even acknowledging that one of their players had called Hwang “Jackie Chan.”

Despite this, FIFA has now ruled against Curto, imposing a 10-match suspension. Of this suspension, five matches are suspended for a two-year probationary period. Additionally, Curto is required to complete community service and participate in training and education sessions with an organization approved by FIFA.

The director of football at Wolves, Matt Wild, welcomed FIFA's decision, stating, "We welcome FIFA’s decision to sanction Marco Curto following the discriminatory incident during our pre-season friendly against Como 1907. The suspension issued to the player sends a clear message that racism and discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated in football or society."
