VIDEO - Sally Field Reflects on “Horrific” Experience of Illegal Abortion

Actress Sally Field, 77, has opened up about her “horrific” experience of undergoing an illegal abortion as a teenager, expressing the lasting shame she feels about the procedure. In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, Field became visibly emotional while recounting the circumstances surrounding the abortion, which occurred before she landed her breakout role in the comedy series “Gidget.”

At 17, Field found herself with limited options and little family support. “I had no choices in my life,” she said. Having recently graduated from high school, she felt uncertain about her future until she discovered she was pregnant.

Field shared that she traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, accompanied by her mother and a family doctor, to have the abortion, which she paid for in cash. Describing the experience, she said, “It was beyond hideous and, you know, life-altering. I had no anesthetic.” She also recalled a disturbing moment during the procedure when a technician began to “molest” her.

Reflecting on her experience, Field expressed empathy for young women today facing similar challenges, particularly in states where abortion access has become increasingly restricted since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. “These are the things that women are going through now,” she noted, highlighting the difficulties many encounter while trying to seek care.

Field had previously shared details of her abortion in her 2018 memoir, “In Pieces.” In her recent remarks, she hopes to inspire others to take action in the upcoming elections. She emphasized the importance of voting to protect reproductive rights, particularly against former President Donald Trump's extreme views on the issue.

“Everyone, please, pay attention to this election, up and down the ballot, in every state — especially those with ballot initiatives that could protect reproductive freedom. PLEASE. WE CAN’T GO BACK!!” Field urged her followers in the video caption.
