FIRS Launches USSD Code 829# to Simplify Tax Processes and Enhance Taxpayer Experience

In a move to improve the ease of doing business in Nigeria, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on Wednesday launched a new Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code, *829#, aimed at enhancing taxpayers' satisfaction. The code was unveiled by FIRS chairman Zacch Adedeji during a ceremony at the Revenue House in Abuja, marking the Customer Service Week themed "Above and Beyond."

With the launch of this service, Nigeria becomes the sixth African country to introduce a USSD platform for simplifying tax payments and inquiries. The service allows taxpayers on any mobile network in the country to easily access key FIRS services such as retrieving their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), verifying their Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC), obtaining information on various tax types and rates, and locating nearby FIRS offices. It also provides answers to general tax-related questions.

Adedeji emphasized that the introduction of the USSD code aligns with FIRS's commitment to making tax administration more accessible and efficient for all taxpayers, regardless of location. He encouraged taxpayers to take advantage of the new service for their inquiries and tax-related needs.

“With the *829# USSD code, taxpayers can now access services like retrieving their TIN, verifying their TCC, and obtaining tax information without needing internet access. This is a significant step towards creating a more efficient and transparent tax system that responds to the needs of all taxpayers,” Adedeji said.

Additionally, the FIRS also launched a Customer Centricity Guide, a handbook outlining the agency's policies and procedures to ensure that taxpayers remain central to their operations. The guide is intended to promote professionalism, respect, and efficiency in all interactions between the FIRS and taxpayers.

Speaking on the importance of the guide, Adedeji noted, “The Customer Centricity Guide reinforces our focus on delivering excellent service, treating taxpayers as valued partners in nation-building, and fostering a culture of trust and voluntary compliance.”

Nnenna Akajemeli, National Coordinator of SERVICOM, commended the FIRS for its efforts to improve taxpayer satisfaction, particularly with the introduction of the *829# USSD code and the customer-centric approach of the new guide. She highlighted the agency's focus on simplifying tax processes and providing high-quality service to Nigerian taxpayers.

FIRS Director of the Taxpayers’ Service Department, Loveth Onanuga, added that the agency's commitment to going “above and beyond” customer expectations aligns with the theme of this year’s Customer Service Week.

These initiatives reflect FIRS’s continued dedication to improving the tax experience in Nigeria, making tax compliance more straightforward and fostering greater participation from taxpayers across the country.
