Former World's Strongest Man and Olympian Geoff Capes Dies at 75

Geoff Capes, a three-time Olympian and two-time World’s Strongest Man, has passed away at the age of 75, his family confirmed.

Capes, widely regarded as Britain’s greatest shot putter, still holds the national record for the longest throw, set in 1980 with a distance of 21.68 meters. Along with his athletic success, he became a two-time World’s Strongest Man, first winning the title in 1983 and again in 1985.

In a statement, his family shared: "The family of Geoffrey Capes would like to announce his sad passing today, 23rd October. Britain’s finest shot putter and twice World’s Strongest Man."

Capes was a household name in the 1980s, frequently appearing on television where he showcased his remarkable strength. After retiring from competition, he continued to make appearances on reality shows.

British Athletics paid tribute to the legendary athlete on X (formerly Twitter), stating: "We are saddened to hear the news of former British shot putter, Geoff Capes’ passing. Our condolences go out to his family and friends at this time."

Capes' legacy as a sports icon and one of Britain’s strongest men will be remembered for years to come.
