Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Election Commission (now the Independent National Electoral Commission), has passed away at the age of 83. He reportedly died in a hospital in Virginia, USA, in the early hours of Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Born on October 2, 1941, in the Ajali community of Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nwosu made a significant impact during his time as NEC Chairman from 1989 to 1993. He is most remembered for overseeing the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria's history.
In that election, Chief Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) emerged victorious over Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC). However, the election results were controversially annulled by then-military president, Ibrahim Babangida.
Prof. Nwosu introduced several key innovations to Nigeria's electoral system, including the Option A4 and Open Ballot voting systems, which earned him international recognition.
Nwosu's contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey will be remembered as part of his enduring legacy.
