The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has refuted claims of declaring a sit-at-home protest in Southeastern Nigeria on October 21 and 22. The separatist group emphasized that it always makes public announcements when enforcing such directives and urged the public to disregard any orders from individuals attempting to tarnish the group's image.
Commercial activities in Aba, Abia State, and other parts of the Southeast were disrupted on Monday, October 21, as schools, banks, markets, and businesses remained closed. This followed a sit-at-home order allegedly issued by suspected pro-Biafra groups, which caused widespread confusion.
In response, IPOB's Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, issued a statement clarifying that the group had not called for any such action. He urged the public to remain calm and ignore the directives, which he attributed to criminals allegedly working to discredit IPOB.
"IPOB did not order a two-day sit-at-home, and we don’t want to create panic over such inconsequential directives from infiltrators," Powerful stated. "We are not in the habit of threatening Ndigbo, and whenever we declare a sit-at-home, we make it public. Our people should disregard such orders from criminals working for the government to tarnish the peaceful image of IPOB."
The group reassured its supporters that it does not enforce sit-at-home protests without valid reasons and warned against following false directives.
