Jose Mourinho Reacts to Sir Alex Ferguson's Exit from Manchester United Ambassadorial Role

Jose Mourinho has shared his thoughts on Manchester United's decision to part ways with Sir Alex Ferguson, who will be stepping down from his £2.16 million ambassadorial role at the end of the season. The move comes as new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe implements a cost-cutting strategy at the club.

Ahead of Fenerbahce’s Europa League clash with United in Istanbul, Mourinho was asked about Ferguson’s exit. Reflecting on his relationship with the legendary manager, Mourinho said, “My relationship with Sir Alex was amazing, incredible. When my Netflix documentary comes out, you will know more about the reason why I have so much respect for him.”

He added that while he was unaware of the specifics behind Ferguson's ambassadorial role being terminated, it was not the money or the title that mattered most. “Sir Alex has the most important thing: the love and respect of every Manchester United fan around the world. That is more important than the role or a few pounds he can make,” Mourinho remarked.

Mourinho also addressed the current state of Manchester United since his departure as manager in December 2018. He expressed well wishes for the club, saying, “I wish the best to Man United since the moment I left. I left with a good feeling toward the club and the fans.”

Ferguson, who became a global ambassador for the club after retiring from coaching in 2013, will see his long-standing contract end as part of Ratcliffe’s efforts to streamline the club’s finances. According to reports, the agreement, worth over £2 million annually, has been in place since October 2013 but is now being terminated by Ratcliffe's Ineos group as part of a broader effort to reduce costs at the club.
