The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has called on the newly elected Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to ensure that he fulfills the promises he made to the people during his campaign. The monarch made this statement while receiving the governor-elect and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, at his palace on Tuesday.
Senator Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the September 21, 2024, governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He garnered 291,667 votes, defeating his main rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 247,566 votes.
Oba Ewuare II expressed his gratitude to God for the peaceful conduct of the election and highlighted that good governance begins with the fulfillment of campaign pledges. "We thank God Almighty for the peaceful election. We thank God for hearing our prayers. Even now, we are still fasting and praying for peace and tranquility in the state," the royal father stated.
The Oba also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ensuring a smooth electoral process, emphasizing the importance of peace in governance. He assured the governor-elect of his palace's support, stating that Okpebholo and his team were welcome anytime, even at odd hours.
During the visit, Okpebholo presented his certificate of return to the monarch, accompanied by his deputy and key APC leaders in the state, including Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Philip Shaibu, and others.
