The Ogun State Government has started the reconstruction and renovation of the MKO Abiola International Stadium and the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, in preparation for the 2024 National Sports Festival, known as the "Gateway Games."
During an inspection of the facilities, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, assured that the renovation would be completed on time and that the facilities would be tested before the games commence. Ongoing works include the scraping of the stadium's main pitch, removal of the tartan tracks, and roof repairs at the Alake Sports Centre’s indoor hall.
Hon. Isiaka also revealed plans to expand the stadium's VIP section and to build an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, and handball courts. He emphasized the current administration’s dedication to developing sports and youth programs in Ogun State, as well as discovering and nurturing young athletic talents.
The commissioner stressed the importance of harnessing youth potential for personal success and socio-economic development. He expressed the government’s commitment to hosting a world-class sports festival, which will showcase the state’s best athletes, inspire the next generation, and promote Ogun’s rich cultural heritage. Hon. Isiaka also pledged to reward outstanding performances during the festival.
Additionally, he highlighted that the renovations would not only enhance local athletes' skills but also demonstrate Ogun State’s readiness to host national and international sporting events. He called on corporate bodies and well-meaning individuals to support the state's efforts in making the National Sports Festival a success.
The festival, scheduled for January 12 to January 26, 2025, will be an opportunity for Ogun State to display its talent, potential, and hospitality on a national stage.
