President Bola Tinubu has introduced a new directive limiting the number of vehicles in the convoys of Ministers, Ministers of State, and Heads of Federal Government Agencies to a maximum of three. This cost-cutting measure, aimed at reducing government expenditure, was announced on October 24 by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
In the statement, Onanuga emphasized that no additional vehicles will be allocated for official movements beyond the three specified in the directive. The president's move comes as part of broader efforts to streamline government spending, following earlier steps taken in January when President Tinubu reduced the size of his foreign travel entourage from 50 to 20 officials and cut local trip delegations to 25.
Additionally, the president has reduced the Vice President's foreign travel entourage to five officials and limited local trips to 15.
The directive also includes restrictions on security personnel attached to officials, with each being assigned no more than five security officers—comprising four police officers and one Department of State Services (DSS) officer. No additional security staff will be provided.
Onanuga further stated that President Tinubu has instructed the National Security Adviser to consult with Military, Paramilitary, and Security Agencies to assess the reduction in their vehicle fleets and security personnel.
All officials are expected to comply with these new measures immediately, underscoring the government's commitment to fiscal responsibility.
