Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of the Southeast has expressed strong disapproval of President Bola Tinubu's recent cabinet reshuffle, characterizing it as a demonstration of "renewed shege," or suffering, for the region. Abaribe's comments come after the president appointed Bianca Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs while removing five ministers and reassigning ten to different portfolios, including the dismissal of Uju-Ken Ohanenye, the former Minister of Women Affairs.
In an interview with Arise TV, Abaribe emphasized that the changes do not represent progress for his constituents. "For my constituents, nothing has changed," he stated, noting that many in the Southeast view the situation not as "Renewed Hope" but rather as "Renewed Shege."
The senator criticized the decision to replace a Southeast minister with another, arguing that it fails to address the region's demands for representation and equity. He accused Tinubu of violating constitutional principles, asserting that the reshuffled cabinet does not reflect the federal character as required by law.
Abaribe further stated, "The president has breached it for the last 18 months. We hoped these changes would bring about adjustments that would address the concerns of the Southeast. The Igbos seek fairness and equity, as outlined in the constitution. We want to be treated equally with everyone else."
His comments highlight ongoing frustrations in the Southeast regarding perceived neglect and inequity in federal governance.
