South African Police Officer Denied Bail After Allegedly Shooting Ex-Girlfriend Seven Times

A South African police officer, Sergeant Alfred Malemela, has been denied bail following charges that he shot his ex-girlfriend, Victoria Ramaphoko, seven times outside the Mankweng Magistrates Court in Limpopo. The incident, which occurred on September 27, 2024, has drawn significant public concern.

Malemela, 40, allegedly carried out the shooting after a Heritage Day event at the courthouse, where Ramaphoko, 38, was celebrating with her colleagues. According to Phaladi Shuping, spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), an argument initially broke out between the two that morning. Malemela reportedly left the courthouse but returned later armed, confronting Ramaphoko at the entrance and allegedly firing multiple shots at her.

Despite her injuries, Ramaphoko was rushed to the hospital and survived the attack. Malemela was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder and violating a protection order previously filed by Ramaphoko.

The Mankweng Magistrates Court denied bail on Friday, and Malemela is expected to reappear in court on December 12, 2024.
