In a gripping story of determination and justice, Gislayne, a Brazilian lawyer, played a crucial role in capturing the man who killed her father, Givaldo Gomes, after he evaded arrest for nearly a decade. Gomes had been sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2013, but remained free while appealing the verdict. When his final appeal was denied in 2016, an arrest warrant was issued, but Gomes vanished once again.
The news was devastating for Gislayne and her family, who lived in constant uncertainty, not knowing if Gomes would ever be found. Speaking to Brazilian news outlet G1, Gislayne, now in her late 20s at the time, expressed the emotional toll his disappearance had on her family.
In 2022, Gislayne, who had become a prison officer, shared that she often imagined the day when Gomes would finally be brought to justice. Later that year, one of her uncles spotted Gomes in the city where the murder had occurred and alerted the authorities, but he escaped before they could arrest him.
Determined to see justice served, Gislayne joined her state’s Civil Police as a clerk in July 2023 and quickly applied to work in the homicide unit. Once part of the team, she helped gather key information on Gomes’ whereabouts, which led to the issuance of a formal arrest order.
In a moment of closure, Gislayne, now 35, confronted her father’s killer at the police station. A video of the confrontation, shared online, captured her telling Gomes, “It’s because of me that you are here,” before adding, “You are now going to pay.”
Her determination and dedication finally brought her father’s killer to justice, ending years of anguish for her and her family.
