Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), has revealed President Bola Tinubu’s directive to convert fuel stations across Nigeria into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) outlets, as part of the government's push for cleaner and more affordable energy.
During a briefing at the State House following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, Ekpo discussed Tinubu’s commitment to expanding CNG usage, highlighting its advantages over traditional fuels. “CNG is safer, cheaper, and environmentally friendly compared to petrol,” Ekpo said.
He noted that Tinubu has established a presidential committee focused on CNG expansion, with a mandate to ensure that most fuel stations nationwide transition to CNG outlets. To support this initiative, the government will provide access to vehicle conversion kits, allowing Nigerians to modify their vehicles to run on CNG.
Ekpo emphasized the cost benefits, stating that while petrol could cost as much as N1,000 per litre, CNG is available at just N200 per standard cubic meter, representing a major saving for consumers. This move aligns with Tinubu’s recent remarks, giving Nigerians a choice between expensive petrol or the cheaper, eco-friendly alternative of CNG.
Ekpo concluded by expressing confidence in the government's ability to bring the CNG initiative to all parts of the country, enabling Nigerians to take advantage of the abundant natural gas resources available.
