Two Brazilian influencers, Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, tragically drowned after their overcrowded boat was hit by a massive wave following a yacht party. The incident, which occurred off Brazil’s Devil’s Throat coast on September 29, has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding their deaths, especially as the women reportedly refused to wear life jackets.
According to Sao Vicente Police Commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino, some passengers on board refused life jackets, reportedly because they wanted to take selfies and felt the jackets would obstruct their tanning. In an interview with local media on October 25, the commissioner explained that authorities are investigating whether the tragedy stemmed from negligence or reckless behavior.
The boat's skipper, one of the five survivors, told authorities that he had been instructed to transport six people back to shore, despite the vessel's capacity of only five. The captain recounted how a large wave suddenly overwhelmed the boat, making it too heavy to stay afloat. Although he tried to save everyone, the craft quickly capsized.
Beatriz’s body was recovered shortly afterward, found drifting at sea by Brazil's Maritime Firefighters. Aline’s remains were discovered a week later, washed up along Itaquitanduva Beach. Heartbreakingly, Aline, a mother who reportedly couldn’t swim, had shared a final image of herself posing on the boat in a bikini. Beatriz, a CrossFit trainer and model since her school days, also lost her life in the accident.
Survivors of the incident, identified as Vanessa Audrey da Silva, Camila Alves de Carvalho, Daniel Goncalves Ferreira, Gabriela Santos Lima, and Natan Cardoso Soares da Silva, described the ordeal as harrowing. Vanessa recounted clinging to rocks after managing to put on a life jacket, while Camila, who also couldn’t swim, clutched a life jacket and fought to stay afloat amid the powerful waves.
The police investigation continues as they aim to determine if the tragedy was avoidable or a tragic accident. Commissioner Alfino emphasized that authorities are carefully reviewing the events leading up to the accident to conclude if negligence was involved.
